Dr. Frank R. Terrant, Jr., Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Psychology
Description
1. Scholarship amounts vary with the amount of money available in the scholarship fund and the number of applicants funded. Awards are typically in the range of $200-800.
2. The award is renewable upon verification of satisfactory academic standing for the following semester. If awarded, the student may not re-apply for the following school year.
Eligibility Requirements
- Appalachian junior, senior, or graduate student.
- Major in Psychology.
- 3.2 GPA in Psychology and overall.
- Full-time student status.

Dr. Paul Fox Scholarship for Psychology Majors (Senior Year)
The Fox Scholarship was founded in honor of Dr. Paul Fox to provide financial support for undergraduate students seeking to participate in research in the Psychology Department.
Description
- Scholarship amounts will be allocated to one or two students in the minimum amount of $500 per student as determined by the Fox Scholarship Committee.
- Students may request that funds be used to support research costs, travel to professional conferences, or cover tuition.
Eligibility
- Full-time psychology major in junior year.
- Demonstrated interest in psychological research by working in a psychology faculty member's research lab with plans to continue in the senior year.
- Satisfactory academic status: Minimum 3.0 GPA in major and overall by the end of the first semester of the junior year.
- Verified financial need.

Drs. Eric and Carole Hatch Memorial Scholarship Fund for Psychology
The Hatch Memorial Scholarship was founded in honor of our colleagues, Drs. Eric (1943-2009) and Carole Hatch, to provide financial support to undergraduate students seeking to complete internships. This scholarship recognizes scholastic merit, quality of internship plan, and essay(s) in the application. Scholarship amounts vary with the amount of money available in the scholarship fund and the number of applicants funded. Awards are typically in the range of $200-800.
Eligibility Requirements
- Applicant must be a junior (2nd semester) or senior with a commitment to a career in psychology.
- Applicant must have been admitted as a psychology major by the Department of Psychology.
- Applicant must demonstrate and maintain satisfactory academic standing (3.0 GPA overall and 3.0 GPA in Psychology).
- Applicant must be a full-time undergraduate student (12+ semester hours).
- Applicant must be committed to completing and have started planning an internship experience that is psychological in nature and will serve to enhance his or her professional development.

James Long and Elizabeth Whitener Long Scholarship for Education and Psychology
Eligibility Requirements
- Graduate of Watauga High School in Boone, N.C.
- Entering college for the first time
- Accepted for admission to Appalachian
- Verifiable need for financial support
- Intended major in Education or Psychology
- Satisfactory academic achievement
- Full time student status

Awards
WiSE Research and Travel Awards
WiSE (Wiley F. Smith Endowment) Awards support graduate and undergraduate student research and travel through the generosity of the family of Dr. Wiley F. Smith, who was the first chairperson of the Psychology Department.
When possible, Research Awards ($100-300 typically) and Travel Awards ($200 maximum) are made during three funding cycles per year. Dates of application for each cycle may be found below. Links to criteria, instructions and application forms are below the table.
